Some Like It Hot: Ascending Anak Krakatau
"We're about halfway up Anak Krakatau at this point. The vegetation behind the trekkers is actually down at sea level.
"We'd spent the previous half-hour clambering through great big lumps of ejecta and boulders, thinking that we'd never make the summit because our guide was having trouble finding the path. It is quite difficult to see it. We were very happy when he found it.
"The pathway took us through an area of fumarole smoke with harsh sunlight from the side. The scene was so remarkable that I got the guys to walk through it a couple times until I felt satisfied that I'd captured the right image."

Photography Notes
- Camera: Hasselblad 501C
- Film: Kodak Portra 160VC
- Lens: 150mm
- Shutter speed: f/5.6 or f/8
- Aperture: 1/250th or 1/125th
- Time of day: 8 a.m.
"The texture in the photo is due to the direction of the sunlight across the scene. The highlight across Jamie's face indicates the direction of the strong cross/back light. This shot gives a very strong impression of the active volcanic environment that we were walking through, and the side lighting emphasizes the harshness of the rocks and the smoke that was blowing across the path. It also indicates the difficulty of the climb."
