The courtship dance of the waved albatross is deeply moving. Returning to Punta Suarez, on the island of Española, after months or years at sea, these two took turns making the moves of reacquaintance: One would arch its neck to the sky and honk while the other watched, and vice versa. They clattered beaks together, clucked, and even mooed like cows. What at first seemed silly grew poignant as the intricacies of the ritual unfoldedand once we learned that these birds mate for life.
