High and Dry in the Altiplano
I thought it'd be a good idea—well, initially I did—to walk into the middle of the lake to get a closer shot of the flamingos. To do so, I ran barefoot out onto one of the salt islands, the temperature of which must have been around 30°F (-1°C), so it felt like I was standing on a block of ice. I stood out there for a few minutes taking some shots and then hobbled back with completely numb feet. In the end the pain was worth it for the photo. These flamingos actually get frozen into the lakes at night. They have to wait until dawn for the ice to melt and release their skinny legs.
