Tim Cahill's
Kenya Walk

Photo: A camel safari in western Kenya

BIG SCREEN? A monumental screening in Utah

Adventure serves up three fantastic events this month.

9/1 -7 Traveling Drive-In
The Austin-based Alamo Drafthouse Cinema kicked off the first ever Rolling Roadshow Tour ($10; www.rollingroadshow.com) in August, a nomadic drive-in movie series that's traveling 6,000 miles (9,656 kilometers) across the American West to show classic movies at the outdoor venues where they were filmed. This month's showings include The Goonies in Astoria, Oregon, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind at Devils Tower National Monument, Wyoming. Each will be projected just after dark on a state-of-the-art inflatable screen. Go online for the full schedule.

9/17 Monster Bash
At the third annual Midwest Monster Adventure Race ($83; www.monsteradventure.com), more than 160 racers are expected to assemble to test their endurance in Quincy, Illinois, just five hours southwest of Chicago. Teams of two or four will take on 50 miles (80.5 kilometers) of mountain biking, a 12-mile (19-kilometers) riverside dash along the Mississippi, and two miles of canoeing, not to mention a sand-bag haul and an obstacle course. No team? Pull together a powerhouse by posting a notice on the race's online forum.

9/23-25 Good Gauley
About 6,000 paddlers will converge on Summersville, West Virginia, for the 22nd annual American Whitewater Gauley River Festival (www.americanwhitewater.org), the largest paddle-sport event on the planet. Sparked to celebrate the curbing of a hydroelectric project, the fest lets river runners delight in surging Class V rapids or less technical paddles, all weekend. Arrive hungry to feast on barbecue, sushi, and fried Oreos. On Friday hear the bluegrass thumps of Misty Mountain Highway and indie rockers A Rooster for the Masses.
