Explorer, scholar, and diplomat Rory Stewart walks down the road to Istalif, a town renowned for its pottery and a great beneficiary of his Turquoise Mountain Foundation (TMF). Just before this shot was taken, Stewart helped push a car filled with locals up this hill.

Before starting the foundation Stewart walked a 600-mile [966-kilometer] walk alone across Afghanistan in 2002—which he wrote about in The Places in Between. He also served as the deputy governor of a province in southern Iraq.
