Over 11 days last year, forest economist Frank Merry and I, accompanied by three local village chiefs, conducted an initial survey of Mount Gorongosa's flora and fauna. The mountain was close to the headquarters of RENAMO—the Mozambican National Resistance. And even though the war is over, hidden arms caches are still found on and around the mountain.
This is our base camp in a forest near the top of Mount Gorongosa, from which we explored the high ground. This rarely visited, little-studied area is a sacred place for ancestral worship among the local communities. We participated in three ceremonies, including the slaughtering of a goat and a meal of its intestines before being allowed up the mountain. —Photographer Paul Kerrison
