On our 18,000-mile (29,968-kilometer) cycling route from Alaska to Argentina, we took a 100-mile (161-kilometer) detour to tiny Hyder, Alaska. One morning, after photographing my quota of brown bears at the Salmon Creek viewing platform, my attention drifted to the fire road in the distance. A ranger told me that it led to Salmon Glacier, the fifth largest glacier on the continent. He warned that it was often fogged in, was much too steep, and had far too many grizzly bears for a cyclist to reach safely. Twenty-three miles (37 kilometers) and 4,300 vertical feet (1,311 vertical meters) later, the clouds parted and Salmon Glacier revealed itself. My cycling partner, Brooks Allen, 29, stopped to pose for this shot.

DIY: Though we opted for a self-guided tour via bicycle, several people in Hyder can arrange transport to Salmon Glacier. Information for the area is available on the chamber of commerce's Web site at www.stewart-hyder.com.
