"I snapped this photo right before I jumped into Wadi el Mujib, a river that has carved the 'Grand Canyon' of Jordan. We swam, scrambled, and climbed over boulders, into caves, and through waterfalls to arrive in this hot-water slot canyon. After following the rope over a giant boulder and swimming under the pounding froth of a 30-foot (9-meter) waterfall, we realized we'd received a priceless reward: seeing part of an incredible canyon in an amazing country few have ever seen before."

DIY: "Most Jordanian guide services are based in Petra. For the right price (and everything is negotiable in Jordan), a guide will drive you to Wadi el Mujib. Or you can do it yourself like I did and meet up with several other adventurous souls through the message board in Lametayel's outdoors store in Tel Aviv, Israel (which is also accessible at www.lametayel.com)."
