My life changed in May 1993, when I made my first visit to the annual Gypsy festival at Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer in southern France. I found myself fascinated with the Gitans and Manouches, the Gypsies of France. I patiently befriended several Gypsy families. Little did I know then that these initial contacts would yield such strong emotional bonds that this reportage would become a lifelong work.
