Tomasz Tomaszewski, a freelance photographer, was born in Warsaw, Poland, in 1953. He started his photographic career with Polish magazines and worked with Solidarity Weekly as well as the underground press.

In 1992 Tomaszewski's work received honorable mention in the magazine news category of the Washington Journalism Review (now the American Journalism Review) awards.
His pictures have appeared in international publications including Stern, Paris-Match, GEO, Time, U.S. News & World Report, and the New York Times.
Tomaszewski is a regular contributor to National Geographic. His photos have accompanied many articles, including "In the Shadow of Attila" in June 2005; "Johannesburg: City of Hope, City of Fear" in April 2004; "Gypsies: The Outsiders" in April 2001; "Rediscovering America" in January 2000; "El Salvador Learns to Live With Peace" in September 1995; and "The St. Lawrence: River and Sea" in October 1994. He has also authored several books, including Remnants: The Last Jews of Poland; Gypsies, the Last Once; Astonishing Spain; and In Search of America.
Tomaszewski's work has been exhibited in the United States, Canada, Israel, Japan, Madagascar, the Netherlands, Germany, France, and Poland. He teaches photography in Poland, the U.S., Germany, and Italy. He and his family live in Warsaw.
