For ten weeks in 1997 I discovered and photographed the blues for NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC. My photographs appear in the April 1999 article “Traveling the Blues Highway.” It was the most enjoyable assignment I’ve ever had. I could have easily spent three or four years shooting, listening to blues, and traveling the “highway” that millions of blacks took as they migrated from the South toward Chicago. I hope my photographs capture some of the light and color of this great American art form.
