During the winter months, the snowy owl’s white plumage acts as natural camouflage in snow-covered landscapes, allowing the bird to swoop down on unsuspecting prey. The snowy owl has a thick layer of down that protects it from harsh, Arctic air temperatures that reach as low as -40°F (-40°C).
