Answering an instinctive call, a female leatherback turtle digs into a sandy beach to lay her eggs before returning to the sea. The world’s largest reptiles, leatherbacks reach greater depths than any other vertebrate—even whales. There are seven species of sea turtles in the world. All six that are found in U.S. waters are endangered.
