Fire is an essential part of the natural prairie habitat. When blazes sweep the grasslands they destroy dry grasses and allow the soil to soak up water and nutrients—promoting reseeding. Now that humans have developed or farm much of the prairie, extensive fires are usually kept in check, but plant species that depend on fire for germination often suffer.
