July 17, 2026 | On Safe Spawning Grounds
A school of longnose gar (Lepisosteus osseus) gather near a patch of floating vegetation in Ichetucknee Springs, Florida. The vegetation mats serve as essential spawning grounds for these prehistoric fish, helping them avoid predators. Spawning only occurs a few days between April and June each year. But the rise of boat traffic and ecotourism is leading to efforts to remove the vegetation from parks and waterways.
