Biography

For me, the Caspian story started 40 years ago. This is where, as a six-year-old in Iran, I saw the sea for the first time. I remember the waves would come up and I would run away. I was scared, but I had this incredible feeling, which follows me to this day: What is there? What is the Caspian?

Finally I got my answer. To do so, I worked for almost two years and traveled to Azerbaijan, Russia, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan. The results are in the May 1999 NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC article “The Rise and Fall of the Caspian Sea”—and in this gallery.
