I had been a NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC photography intern less than six days when I was shipped off to France. My assignment: Cover the photojournalism event of the year—Visa Pour l’Image in Perpignan. I had never shot in color. I would be photographing my heroes, people whose works were my textbooks. I was doing what I love to do, and I was nervous. But I had been given a chance. That’s what Perpignan is all about: aspiring photographers looking for their lucky break—their first assignment.
