Originally named Olema Station after the railroad that ran through it for 53 years, Point Reyes Station is a bohemian outpost an hour north of San Francisco. Its main drag is a block long, featuring a quaint coffee shop with a rack for the regulars’ mugs. This is the place where motorcyclists come to cruise serpentine Highway 1, hikers to trek in the nearby 71,000 acres (28,733 hectares) of Point Reyes National Seashore, and surfers to ride waves off of Bolinas and Stinson Beach.

PLAY

Point Reyes Lighthouse is the logo of the town newspaper and one of the most identifiable symbols of the region. From the Bear Valley Visitor’s Center, a 45-minute hike can get you there. Along the way, watch for some of the 38 threatened and endangered species that live in the park, including Tule elk and Western snowy plover birds. Once you reach the lighthouse deck, you can spot Northern Elephant Seals and California Gray Whales (www.nps.gov/pore).
