“I live in the bush because I like the peace of nature – the smells, the sounds, the energy, the calm,” he says. James has written three books and is also a gifted musician.
James was born in Johannesburg and has over a decade of experience working in reserves in Southern Africa. He has a B.Sc. in Wildlife Science and a master's in human development which focused on rural people who live outside of game reserves.
After completing his studies, he worked as a guide, trainer and land manager at the famous Londolozi Game for 3 years.
Since then he has worked at various reserves both in South Africa and Botswana as a head guide and manager.
James has always had a bent for the theatrical. He has worked as a professional musician, guitar teacher and part-time actor. He has also dabbled in wildlife filmmaking, appearing in a children's wildlife series, producing sales videos for safari operators, and composing the music scores for these videos as well.
James has a dry, sarcastic wit that reflects the inspiration and joy he derives from observing the human condition and the natural environment. He speaks both Shangane and isiZulu and is the author and co-author of three South African best-selling books.
