Legends of Spain: Canary Islands
“Legends of Spain” uncovers Spain as a rich, mysterious landscape of myth and storytelling. Through the lens of renowned photographer Matthieu Paley, National Geographic CreativeWorks explored how geography, history, and culture inspired some of the greatest Spanish legends—imploring curious travellers to come and discover a more legendary Spain.

THE BRIEF
The Canary Islands are a popular holiday destination among British tourists especially, but these incredible volcanic isles are relatively unknown to US travellers. So, leveraging a continuation of the “Legends of Spain” concept, National Geographic CreativeWorks aimed to capture the imagination of these American adventure-loving travellers by driving awareness of the Canary Islands, especially their diversity of landscapes, cultures, and histories.

SOLUTION
To create a rich content series, National Geographic photographer Matthieu Paley visited the Canaries, investigating three local legends: An aboriginal shepherd who battled a demon goat in Lanzarote, spectral dogs connected to the original ancient culture of Gran Canaria, and a ninth ‘phantom’ Canary Island, said to appear and disappear.
This custom content (videos, articles, and galleries) was distributed through our existing dedicated content hub, which was also localized across two local National Geographic sites, amplified across our global digital and social platforms—including organic Instagram reel and carousel posts and Instagram Stories on the @natgeotravel account, TikTok video posts and Facebook organic and dark paid posts.
Bespoke content was also featured in the National Geographic Compass digital Newsletter and print in the global edition of National Geographic Magazine.
