SEA BEYOND

THE FUTURE STEWARDS OF OUR OCEAN

All over the world, a wave of young people are rediscovering their connection with our ocean, and stepping up to become its future stewards. Discover some of their stories in Japan and Hawaiʻi, as part of Prada Group’s SEA BEYOND initiative in partnership with UNESCO.

JAPAN

In Tokyo, a city of more than 14 million people, an ancient approach to creating a better relationship between land and sea is being explored by a group of young ocean enthusiasts.

Revitalizing Japan’s coasts through satoumi, science & school

Japan is combining education, culture and technology to encourage reciprocal relationships between coastal communities and marine ecosystems.

Nurturing Japan’s next generation of coastal protectors

Japanese students reconnect with maritime heritage and surrounding ecosystems, becoming future stewards of their country’s unique marine treasures.

      HAWAIʻI

On the island of Oʻahu, ancient fishponds, that may hold the secret to a better relationship with our ocean, are being rediscovered by kids as part of a powerful education initiative.

An ancient Hawaiian marine technology could help oceans recover

Hawaiians have been harvesting fish sustainably for generations, tending traditional ponds known as loko iʻa. The multibillion-dollar aquaculture industry is starting to take notice.

Passing the torch in protecting Hawaiʻi’s shores

Young stewards learn to protect Hawaiʻi’s coasts, embracing indigenous values and hands-on lessons in ocean conservation and care.

An ancient species and an ancient underwater forest are both under threat as our ocean changes. Understanding the issues they face is the first step in turning the tide and helping them fight back.

Marine engineers: Five species that shape underwater ecosystems

Among the myriad creatures that populate our ocean, some stand out as having an outsized impact on the marine environment—shaping and maintaining habitats that themselves sustain countless other forms of life.

Forgotten forests: Regenerating the kelp forest highway

The rich resources of Pacific kelp forests helped humans populate the Americas. Now depleted by as much as 95 percent, they need our help to recover.

              NORWAY

Pollution, both seen and heard, is changing the way both humans and our ocean’s creatures are living. We can make a difference if we understand the challenge this fragile ecosystem is up against.

Circular currents: Stemming the plastic tide in the Arctic

Once considered remote and pristine, the Arctic is now succumbing to a tide of plastic. In Norway, a monumental effort is underway to curb its spread.

                  Sound waves and sea creatures

Thousands of marine species from microscopic zooplankton to the largest cetaceans rely on sound for survival and many have evolved unique oral and aural adaptations. Understanding them better could help us reduce the impact of anthropogenic noises from shipping and marine industry.
