Inside the Geode as Big as a Garage

Millions of years of percolating water and geological dumb luck created Crystal Cave, an uncannily pristine chamber beneath a Lake Erie island. When a winemaker accidentally drilled into it, one of the United States’ most surprising natural attractions was born.

When you step inside what’s billed as the world’s largest geode, the first impression is chaos. The Crystal Cave—found nearly 40 feet belowground on Ohio’s South Bass Island, in the western basin of Lake Erie—feels snaggletoothed, with crystals crowded upon crystals, emerging in every direction from the walls and ceiling, a kind of frozen pandemonium. Behind it all is a sense of great pressure and heat, of powerful processes at work.

I ventured in earlier this year during the ferry-accessed island’s sleepy offseason, and the jumble brought to mind the geodes I collected obsessively as a kid. None of those were larger than walnuts, but cracking them open was like breaking into tiny treasure chests packed with diamonds. The Crystal Cave has the same effect but at the scale of a roomy garage. The thousands of opaque, whitish blue crystals that pack its walls range in size from human hands to larger than footballs. In the back of the cave, a geologist in the 1970s documented what is likely among the largest celestite crystal ever found: 24 by 18 by six inches.

But maybe the most surprising thing about the cave is that you can enter it by simply walking down a flight of stairs. It’s on the grounds of Heineman’s Winery, right there beneath the tasting room, in the resort town of Put-in-Bay. Vintner Gustav Heineman discovered it in 1896 while drilling a water well and wasted little time excavating a stairway inside. Charging visitors to see it helped keep his business afloat during Prohibition, when all he could sell was grape juice, and his descendants have been ushering in sightseers ever since. Today Guinness World Records certifies its claim to be the world’s largest geode—as distinct from a cavern system—although there are also rivals to the title.

Dustin Heineman—who with his sister, Ava, represents the fifth generation to run the family business—is more interested in winemaking than geoscience. But he lit up when I asked about family lore surrounding the cave. The tale he knows best comes from his great-granddad Norman, Gustav’s son and the first person to see the cavern. As Norman told it, Gustav was boring the well when he felt his drill drop into what he assumed was a cavity in the bedrock. To learn what was below, he strapped five-year-old Norman in a bucket and lowered him into the depths. “I had a kerosene lantern with me,” Norman told a magazine interviewer in 1974, “and I remember he told me to hang on real tight.”

Gustav’s parental instincts might have been questionable, but not his business acumen. He and his crew harvested some 150 tons of crystals while leveling the floor and raising the ceiling enough that visitors could stand upright. It’s likely he sold some, including to the pyrotechnics industry: Strontium within celestite, ground into powder and packed inside fireworks, burns a captivating red. Then Gustav built a gift shop and stocked it with exotic minerals, fossils, and semiprecious stones from around the world, as well as keepsakes and trinkets. Now some 40,000 people visit the winery and cave (and gift shop) each year.

But while it remains a novelty attraction on a much touristed island, the Crystal Cave is also one of the United States’ most fascinating mineralogical phenomena, distinctive not only for the unusual size and profusion of its crystals but also for their type.

The first key factor in creating Crystal Cave was the water that trickled into it. All geodes form when water seeps into limestone, dolomite, and other sedimentary rock, dissolving softer materials such as calcium and leaving behind voids. Then, over millions of years, the water evaporates into mineral deposits that cling to the cavities’ walls, accumulating in striking geometrical forms that we call crystals.

In the American Midwest, groundwater tends to be infused with significant amounts of dissolved silica, which crystallizes as the mineral quartz. But on South Bass, the groundwater contains an unusual abundance of strontium and sulfate, dissolved from underlying dolomite. And those minerals, when combined, form the crystal celestine, also known as celestite, which is typically pale blue and gauzier than its gem-shop shelf-mate quartz.

Celestine is many times more soluble than dolomite and can be deposited and re-deposited over immense spans of time. And it helped the cave’s development that South Bass’s subterranean rock and aquifer have been remarkably stable, allowing mineral-rich waters to circulate consistently over the ages. Finally, the Heineman cavern is unusually spacious, leaving plenty of room for crystals to grow.

But crystallization in any given cavity isn’t guaranteed. Of the 30 or so known caverns on South Bass Island, most are quite small, and only the Heinemans’ has a significant number of crystals. That Gustav Heineman managed to sink a drill bit into the Crystal Cave is a fluky reminder that our planet operates on its own mysterious terms, patient enough to spend millions of years perfecting a room no one was ever meant to see.

“It’s kind of a one-off find,” says Ohio mineralogist Jamison Brizendine, who has researched Crystal Cave for the journal Mineralogical Record. “Think of it like a super-saturated pocket where everything was concentrated in just one spot.” And because it was discovered by drilling rather than blasting, Brizendine says, “when you walk into it, these crystals are absolutely pristine.”

That’s why many of the cave’s crystals have found their way—some of them donated by Gustav—into university and museum collections, including at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, where they’ve been a resource to geological researchers for a century or more. Brizendine remembers the first time he laid eyes on Heineman crystals, one of them nearly two feet tall, at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. “These were probably some of the largest crystals of celestine on the planet,” he says. His reaction? “A sense of awe.”
