In densely populated urban centers, those with green thumbs must get creative. In Melbourne, Australia, a parking lot rooftop turned vegetable garden is made up of 140 do-it-yourself plots.

12 Photographers Show Us the Food Landscape in Their Cities

Images from our global Your Shot community provide a glimpse of the colorful ways that food is woven into our urban areas.

October is synonymous with the harvest, a time to celebrate and reflect on bounty. At National Geographic, we've been covering the challenge of how to feed a growing world, and we asked the Nat Geo Your Shot community to show us how they and their city support a more sustainable food system. Many responded to the hashtag #foodforthecity with images of urban agriculture and community gardens while others conveyed the bustling street scenes, markets, and vendors more broadly associated with life in an urban landscape.

After putting out the call for entries on World Food Day, October 16, we mark (U.S.) National Food Day—whose theme this year is "Toward a Greener Diet"—by celebrating the creativity that we saw worldwide. The gallery includes 12 of the best images we received from photographers ranging from Lisbon to Melbourne to Kolkata.

Once you've flipped through these pictures, read about a new league of "nerd farmers" at the forefront of high-tech efforts to grow food in our cities and check out more information about sustainable cities here.
