100 Years Ago, President Wilson Says “Do Your Bit for America”

A century ago, the April issue of National Geographic showed a world at war, and included this presidential proclamation urging all Americans to put their country first.

President Wilson’s address appeared in the April 1917 issue of National Geographic magazine and is reproduced here in honor of the 100th anniversary of the United States’ entry into World War I. Many of the articles that followed this letter showed the dire situation in Europe and the training of U.S. soldiers, giving American citizens a real sense of what they would be fighting for.
