November 4, 2026 | Behind the Backdrop
For her series Am I What You’re Looking For?, photographer Endia Beal asked young Black women entering the workforce to dress as they would for a job interview and pose in their homes against a backdrop of an office. Beal intentionally left the edges of the backdrop visible, drawing attention to the ways Black women may feel pressure to change how they present themselves to fit into professional spaces. This photograph is featured in If Emmett Till Lived, an exhibition at Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Photography that considers what freedom looks like in American life, including in education and the workplace.
