A scabiosa stellata (Lomelosia stellata) grows at Redwood Roots Farm in Bayside, California. The plant’s delicate blossoms quickly fall away, leaving behind distinctive paper-like, geometric seed pods often coveted in gardens and bouquets. Photographer Ellen Mary Cronin tells National Geographic the flower stopped her in her tracks, as it was “somehow both delicate and rough at the same time.”
