A yellow-legged gull (Larus michahellis) stands on a wall painted with gull artwork in Rome, Italy. Small colonies of these birds often take advantage of the city’s tall buildings for nesting, roosting, and perching. During the COVID-19 pandemic, residents routinely left dry pet food out on ledges of these buildings, allowing gulls to thrive alongside people in this urban environment. This photograph was a winning entry in the 2026 Bird Photographer of the Year competition.
