Take Off

Birds fly over Bass Rock, a seabird sanctuary in Scotland's Firth of Forth. The rocky island is home to 150,000 northern gannets, the world's largest population. John Birch says a slow shutter speed helped him capture the "several thousand [that] are in the air at any one time, circling in the same direction to avoid a collision."
