Hippos, Tanzania
This Month in Photo of the Day: Your Photos
I have often heard that hippos are especially dangerous because of their jaws but was lucky enough to actually witness an adult male's display of strength while on safari in Tanzania.

What Makes This a Photo of the Day? When I first heard how dangerous hippos are, I was both surprised and fascinated. Topping my list of fearsome water creatures were the usual suspects—those with visible teeth and sharp snouts. I like how we see both "sides" here: the deceptively calm-looking hippos alongside the one showing us his enormous maw. —Alexa Keefe, Photo of the Day editor
