Fight Fire With Fire

A member of the Wyoming Hotshots crew lights a torch, getting ready to start a backfiring operation in Wind Caves National Park, South Dakota. Controlled burns literally fight fire with fire-- they burn up dried brush and other fuel that would strengthen a wildfire. When the wildfire runs out of fuel, it peters out.
