A jaguar watches from a treetop as stars fill the dark blue night sky above it.
October 8, 2026 | The Watcher
A jaguar (Panthera onca) patrols from a tree beneath a star-filled sky in Brazil’s Pantanal region, home to the world’s highest concentration of wild jaguars. As apex predators, these jaguars help regulate populations of prey such as capybaras, caimans, and deer. But their habitat faces growing threats from climate-driven mega fires, which have burned vast portions of the wetland. In turn, these fires have injured, dehydrated, and displaced jaguars while also destroying their habitat and prey. This photograph is featured in National Geographic photographer Steve Winter's book Big Cats.
