August 27, 2026 | Amidst the Glow
The northern lights shine behind an abandoned homestead near Crawford, Nebraska. The light display can sometimes be seen in the Nebraska Panhandle, but only during strong geomagnetic storms, which happen just a few times a year. Also known as aurora borealis, the northern lights result from the collision of the sun's ions with gas atoms in Earth's atmosphere, which then releases particles of light in different colors.
