A diverse and uniquely beautiful underwater world as captured by the Your Shot community in these winning photographs.

It takes patience, enthusiasm, and passion to make images underwater, but it’s worth the effort: The world below the surface is a captivating and magical place.

Members of National Geographic’s Your Shot community were invited to submit their best underwater photographs. For 90 days, every image posted with the hashtag “underwater” was reviewed by curator Lauri Hafvenstein, and her top picks have been featured on the Your Shot Blog, Editor’s Spotlight.

Award-winning underwater photographer Brian Skerry came to National Geographic’s Washington, D.C. headquarters to help with the difficult job of selecting finalists. “We’re going to have to be tough” Skerry said after seeing the final round of edited images. “There’s some really beautiful stuff here … a lot that stands out.”
