Your best photos of the week, October 19, 2018

Each week, our editors choose stunning photos submitted by members of Your Shot, National Geographic's photo community.

This weekly series has become a journal of sorts for me. Each week I assemble my favorite 10 photographs from the daily uploads and every day comes with a new set of images with new moods, perspectives and concepts. When I prepare the weekly series on Thursdays (sometimes early Friday, oops) while I have a million things in my head, I remember the photographic journeys I took from during the past 7 days. There will be images that I especially love because they made me smile when I needed it, or caused me to lose my breath from stunning beauty. The hardest reality is that those images won’t always make the final edit.

Admittedly, this written portion can be most stressful because I’m constantly wondering what I’ll write about this week. How do I keep my thoughts fresh? How do I address issues transparently without sounding preachy? There is no simple, formulaic answer to this question, but, at its core that sums up photo editing. There is never one right answer. A constant creative back and forth about the who, what, where, why and how.

While preparing my edit for this week’s series, I felt a huge rush of relief when I thought simply to myself, “This series is like a journal of what I saw this week and now I have an opportunity to arrange that particular week into a photographic series that resonated with me.” Photo editing is a form of compiling thoughts and emotions into one story and finding the rhythm to make all the photos fit together. That’s the most exciting, albeit challenging, part.

This series is my way of journaling from the last week.

Associate Photo Editor Kristen McNicholas looks at daily uploads from Your Shot, starting each day by sifting thousands of photographs. This series is a selection of her favorites from the past week.
