Your best photos of the week, March 8, 2019

Each week, our editors choose stunning photos submitted by members of Your Shot, National Geographic's photo community.

For this week’s Best Photos of the Week from Your Shot, I wanted to celebrate women photographers, women in photographs, as well as those who identify as women in honor of International Women’s Day. I tried to select photographs that celebrate women from all corners of the global Your Shot photo community.

In the past few months, I noticed some fascinating slow-shutter abstract photographs coming through in the daily edits. Soon, I could immediately recognize Daniele Filacchioni’s photographs when she uploaded. We recently did a profile on her as part of our Your Story series. She writes, “I’m trying to transform emotions into images. I want to bring out an alternative point of view which is able to stimulate the spectator’s imagination, and a point of view that does not necessarily reflect what we usually see in reality.”

How we photograph women is important. This past week, Chris Parkes shared this stunning portrait of Falmatta, whose real name has been withheld for security purposes. Chris made a portrait about her strength and tenacity in the face of adversity, rather than the hardship she has experienced. The moment I saw this portrait during my daily edits, I was immediately impressed with the grace that surrounded her in this portrait.

Since last fall, this series has represented approximately 40% women photographers each week. Our Your Shot Best of 2018 represented 51%. The voices of women are crucial to a fair and balanced view of the world, both in front of and behind the camera. As a photo editor, it’s my role to present that balanced narrative from our photographers, so it’s my huge pleasure to share these images on one of my favorite awareness days. Happy International Women’s Day!

Associate Photo Editor Kristen McNicholas looks at daily uploads from Your Shot, starting each day by sifting through thousands of photographs. This series is a selection of her favorites from the past week.
