Your best photos of the week, March 29, 2019

Each week, our editors choose stunning photos submitted by members of Your Shot, National Geographic's photo community.

Each week the Your Shot team has the pleasure of selecting our favorite photos from the daily uploads from photographers around the world. We go on an emotional roller coaster as we look at images that bring a smile to our faces or break our hearts. Photography is a visual language that evokes emotion, crafts a narrative, and creates a resounding mood that influences the viewer—all in one pivotal moment.

When I saw Your Shot photographer Cathy Pepin-Toussaint’s black-and-white photograph of her newly adopted guinea pig being tenderly handled, I immediately smiled at the soft touch and beautiful light. But I was most impressed that she made such a lovely photograph in the comfort of her own home. She followed the light and caught a moment that many of us can relate to: gently petting our furry family members, bringing joy to ourselves and our animal counterparts.

There can be a misconception in photography that you have to travel to make good photos. The reality is that a great photographer can make impactful photos in their own backyard—a skill that many Your Shot photographers are honing every day.

I’m proud of all of our community photographers, but there’s something special about finding photographs in everyday life for the rest of us to experience together.

Associate Photo Editor Kristen McNicholas looks at daily uploads from Your Shot, starting each day by sifting through thousands of photographs. This series is a selection of her favorites from the past week.
