You’ve probably heard it said before: Some people just don’t know when to quit.

For photographer Ami Vitale, quitting has never been an option. When faced with difficult stories of poverty, animal poaching, or civil unrest, Vitale has pushed through physical and emotional obstacles to tell meaningful stories. Her passion for photojournalism has led her to many distant places, including Guinea-Bissau, where her career started, and India, which she made her home for nearly six years. Instead of bouncing around the world and only staying for short moments, Vitale believes that staying in one place is essential to truly understanding the story you are trying to tell.
