Representation and diversity are crucial to achieving balance in story-telling. This week I refocused my energy into ensuring that women photographers were represented fairly in this series. Unfortunately, some weeks have been more unbalanced but women have powerful voices that should be heard, behind and in front of the camera.
As a woman in photography and media, I have a responsibility to use my training to lift up my fellow female-identifying counterparts. I won’t be perfect every day or in every photo selection, but I will always be making my best efforts to represent a diverse group of photographers and characters.
Photography has been known as a “boys club” but incredible women in this industry have long been paving the way for us to stand up and stake our claim to our talent, creativity, and hunger that may have been overlooked. I was ecstatic this week to see women in the Your Shot community sharing a variety of photographs ranging from landscapes and wildlife to portraits and still life.
Women are always welcome in the Your Shot community. I have found it to be nothing short of a safe space as a female-identifying editor and photographer surrounded by a community full of kind and supportive photographers. The community as a whole is encouraging to photographers of all walks of life and skill levels. I am proud to be a part of it.
