PhotographyYour Shot Photos of the Week

Your best photos of the week, January 11, 2019

Each week, our editors choose stunning photos submitted by members of Your Shot, National Geographic's photo community.

Happiest new year wishes to you all and a hearty welcome back to your favorite weekly photo series from National Geographic’s photo community, Your Shot! After a lovely holiday spent with my family in the Finger Lakes region of New York and then vacation in Cancún, Mexico, I’m pleased to be back to share the best uploads from the past week in Your Shot. I’m excited to brainstorm new ideas for the series in the new year and see this young series continue to grow.

Rest and rejuvenation are pertinent to creative minds (any minds, but especially to nurture creativity) and I found myself inspired by the warmth in the shadows and bright colors that I miss during the dreary Washington, D.C. winter amidst an equally as dreary government furlough. I don’t believe that good photos can only be made with beautiful settings but the lush greens of the jungle and bright pinks of bougainvillea dancing in the Caribbean Sea breeze reawakened a thirst to examine light and frame the world around me to save a little piece of it.

This selection of images reminded me of the light and colors I was studying during my travels. Colors of every hue and saturation paired with light, pattern and texture that stimulated my imagination. I remembered why I loved making pictures and the inspiration I get from the Your Shot community every day.

Warmest wishes for this new year, I’m looking forward to the growth in this series.
