PhotographyYour Shot Photos of the Week

Your best photos of the week, July 12, 2019

Each week, our editors choose stunning photos submitted by members of Your Shot, National Geographic's photo community.

Summer is officially here in the Northern Hemisphere! Its heavy, damp air is present in full force here in Washington, D.C., so I welcome any relief I can find. This week, Your Shot photographers transported me to different places through images that had classically summer vibes with sunshine, color, and whimsy.

Your Shot photographer James Rokop has been documenting synchronized swimmers in Davis, California, and I’ve been following along in my daily edits. I was completely charmed by this trio waiting to test out their new bathing suits for an upcoming show. I love how he captures a sense of anticipation while using the natural setting as a timeless composition.

In the same vein of whimsy as James’s swimmers is Neelima Azad’s flying cat, Momo, as he rushes to get his meal. Anyone who has owned a cat knows how motivated by food they can be. I can’t help but smile at the cat’s perfect shadow on the ground as he soars through the air.

Photography has the unique ability to remind us of the feeling of a season, the warmth of the sun on our skin, the smell of a pool, or the sound of fireworks while celebrating a holiday. Although I find myself looking forward to a reprieve from the humidity of D.C., I appreciate any opportunity to experience the feeling of summer from somewhere else.

Associate Photo Editor Kristen McNicholas looks at daily uploads from Your Shot, starting each day by sifting through thousands of photographs. This series is a selection of her favorites from the past week.
