Hawaii's māhū—and their ancient history—are finally re-embraced

The restored history of a Native Hawaiian monument elevates part of the rich, sacred story of māhū—those who are of dual male and female spirit–and whose powerful roles in Hawaiian culture are still present today.

Members of the LGBTQ+ community as well as māhū­—a mixture of both male and female in mind, heart, and spirit—have historically found kindred family at nightclubs and elsewhere. These chosen families, referred to as “houses” offer support that includes caregiving, assistance, and shelter when needed.
