The answer begins with rethinking the relationship between buildings and energy.
For decades, homes have been designed to consume electricity when needed. Whether powering a stove, charging an electric vehicle, or cooling a living room on a hot summer afternoon, demand is largely dictated by the homeowner and met by the grid. But demand is not constant. On the hottest days and coldest nights, millions of homes draw power simultaneously, creating periods of peak demand that place significant strain on energy infrastructure.
The U.S. electric grid has finite capacity, and expanding that capacity takes significant investment and time. As one of the country's largest providers of HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) solutions, Carrier understands both the importance of indoor comfort and the challenges associated with growing energy demand.

Hakan Yilmaz, President of Carrier Energy and Chief Sustainability Officer, sees both the challenge and the opportunity. He explains that heating and cooling are among the country’s biggest uses of electricity, with Carrier itself representing approximately 100 gigawatts of load on the U.S. grid. This scale gives Carrier a unique opportunity to help shape how homes interact with the energy system of the future. As Hakan asserts: “We have an opportunity to make a meaningful impact by helping HVAC systems run more efficiently.”
Rather than relying solely on building more power generation capacity, Carrier is helping lead a shift toward smarter energy management. The company's connected solutions are designed to make better use of existing electricity by intelligently adjusting energy consumption based on a home's needs and broader grid conditions.
For homeowners, these adjustments often happen seamlessly in the background. Across millions of connected systems, however, the collective impact can be significant. It's a subtle but important shift in thinking. Homes and buildings are no longer just consumers of energy. Increasingly, they’re becoming active participants in the systems that power modern communities.

This concept is central to the vision of smart cities. By using digital technologies and connected devices to gather real-time information, cities can better manage resources, improve efficiency, and enhance quality of life for residents. Angela Biagi, Urban Planner with WGI, says infrastructure is one of the first considerations when designing new communities. "Anything we can do through different types of technology, smart home systems, making systems smaller and reducing our footprint, is a benefit to everybody."
For Carrier, that vision extends all the way into the home. Connected technologies and intelligent HVAC systems are changing the way homeowners interact with their comfort. Rather than operating at full capacity all the time, today's systems can adapt based on occupancy, weather conditions, and homeowner preferences.
Nick explains that the impact extends beyond the equipment itself. "Some of the greatest opportunities come from helping homes respond more intelligently to how people actually live,” he says. By this, he means technology that can learn preferences, adapt performance, and optimize energy use in the background, so homeowners don’t have to choose between comfort and efficiency. When multiplied across millions of homes, this technology can help reduce energy waste, lower costs, and ease pressure on the grid.

As communities continue to grow and cooling becomes increasingly essential, the future of comfort will depend on more than generating additional electricity. It will depend on using energy more intelligently. Hakan sees two paths forward: Build ever more infrastructure to meet rising demand, or create smarter homes, buildings, and appliances capable of working together to optimize the resources already available.
