Look for the 'Summer Triangle' Stars. They Can Unlock the Rest of the Night Sky.

Made up of three of summer’s brightest stars, the Summer Triangle is an easy starting point for exploring—and photographing—the Milky Way and beyond.

Stargazing can feel overwhelming when you don’t know where to begin. But in August, three exceptionally bright stars offer an easy starting point.

Vega, Deneb, and Altair form the Summer Triangle, an enormous star pattern that rises high in the evening sky across much of the Northern Hemisphere. Once you find it, the triangle can serve as a guide to nearby constellations, deep-sky objects, and the Milky Way.

It is also one of the most photogenic regions of the summer sky in August. Here’s how to find the Summer Triangle—and photograph what surrounds it.

How to Find the Summer Triangle

The Summer Triangle is not a constellation, but an asterism, or a recognizable pattern of stars. Begin with Vega, one of the brightest stars visible from Earth. In mid-August, observers in the Northern Hemisphere can generally find it high overhead. Deneb appears to one side of Vega, while Altair lies farther away, creating a large, elongated triangle.

The pattern is much bigger than first-time spotters might expect. Held at arm’s length, a hand cannot cover it, so look across a wide expanse of sky rather than searching for a compact formation.

Use the Summer Triangle to Navigate the Night Sky

Once you locate the triangle, its stars can guide you toward several constellations and deep-sky objects. Vega marks Lyra, a small constellation often depicted as a harp. Deneb forms part of Cygnus, the swan, whose brightest stars create a cross-shaped pattern. Altair belongs to Aquila, the eagle, and is flanked by two fainter stars, making it easier to identify.

In the vicinity of the triangle, stargazers can search for Sagitta, the arrow, and Delphinus, the dolphin. Binoculars or a small telescope can reveal additional objects, including the Dumbbell Nebula in Vulpecula and the globular cluster Messier 71 in Sagitta.

Under dark skies, the Milky Way appears as a faint, cloudy band running through the triangle. The bright galactic core lies farther south, toward Sagittarius, but the section crossing the Summer Triangle contains star fields and interstellar dust.

Try Photographing the Summer Triangle and the Milky Way

The combination of three bright stars and the Milky Way makes the Summer Triangle a natural subject for beginner astrophotographers.

Before setting up a camera, check the calendar—astrophotography works best with the darkest skies, often during a new moon. Then find a dark location and check the conditions. “I use a variety of weather forecasting tools to check cloud cover as well as wind speeds at my shooting location,” says Mike Mezeul II, a nature photographer and Nikon Ambassador. “Clear skies, low humidity, and calm winds make for the best photography.”

When composing your shot, consider the foreground, whether that’s the natural landscape or a man-made feature. “I often look for subjects that can convey scale or perhaps the passage of time or even the connection between mankind and our universe,” says Mezeul. “To help with creating a shot, I typically utilize the apps Star Walk and PhotoPills. These apps help line up the position of celestial events with my location.”

Choosing the Right Camera Gear

Expensive equipment is not essential. “The best camera is the one in your hand,” says Mezeul. Some newer smartphones can capture the Milky Way under dark conditions, particularly when stabilized on a tripod and used in a night or long-exposure mode.

For those shooting with a full camera, choose a wide-angle lens with a wide aperture. Mount the camera on a sturdy tripod, open the aperture as much as possible, and experiment with exposures of around 10 to 20 seconds.

Autofocus often struggles in darkness, so switch to manual focus and use Vega or another bright star as a target. Magnify it on the camera screen, then adjust the focus ring until the star appears sharp. “Always double-check your image to make sure it’s sharp before calling it a night,” says Mezeul.
