Behind the Image: July/August Your Shot

On the back page of our July/August issue we featured a reader submitted photo (above) of a floating döner kebab stand on Frankfurt’s Main River. The photo was taken by Carsten Bockermann who wrote, “This döner boat caught my eye because, while these kebab stands that serve flatbread overflowing with meat and vegetables are everywhere in Germany, I had never seen one on a boat. The Turkish owner, Ramiz Meral, says it took him almost two years to get a permit from the city.”

After we published the story, Bockermann wrote back to tell us that he presented the issue to the boat’s Turkish owners, (pictured above), who now proudly flaunt a laminated copy of the article to friends and customers. Plus, Turkey’s Hürriyet Daily News covered it in an online story.

This floats our boat.
