Everything to Know About Chicago

Here's how to plan the best possible trip to the Windy City.

Humble Midwestern roots keep this vibrant city with world-class architecture, arts and dining grounded. Chicago loves its sports, too, and if a team is doing well, you'll feel the energy pulsing through the streets. Locals are friendly and happy to help with directions or recommendations.

When to Go

Summers can be humid and hot and winters frigid. Spring is finicky, but autumn brings the most predictably nice weather although coupled with sports playoffs and business events it can be just as crowded as summer. Hotel rates are lowest in January and February.

Celebrate

Lollapalooza is the summer's biggest music festival, taking over all of Grant Park in August. Chicago Gourmet offers a taste of the best food and drink in the city all in one whirlwind weekend in Millennium Park. Visit during St. Patrick's Day to see the Chicago River dyed bright green during the annual revelry celebrating the city's Irish heritage.

What to Eat

Deep dish pizza pie is the city's most famous dish, although it's difficult to eat more than one hefty slice. A dripping wet French-dipped Italian beef sandwich and Chicago hot dog that's been dragged through the garden are musts for carnivores. Chicago also has a ridiculous amount of steakhouses, so dig into a tomahawk chop that's bigger than your head.

Souvenir to Take Home

Pick up artwork, accessories and gifts from one of the 90 plus artisans at the Andersonville Galleria and musical accoutrements at Transistor down the street. For those with a sweet tooth, don't pass up the chocolate truffles from Katherine Anne Confections.

Sustainable Travel Tip

Whichever airport you fly into, there's a convenient public transportation option into the city to avoid highway traffic. Take the Blue Line downtown from O'Hare or Orange Line from Midway.

Instagram-Worthy View

A selfie with the shiny reflective bean in Millennium Park is Chicago's most iconic shot. The sculpture's real name is Cloud Gate, by British artist Anish Kapoor. A lot of hotels in the city have remarkably great city and lake views too, especially from the rooftop.
