Why You Should Go to Namibia Now

Pack your bags for this stunning African destination before everyone else does.

A land abounds with silty, ochre-colored sand dunes, ample opportunities for wildlife watching, and lines of rugged mountaintops jutting through the country—Namibia is often called “Land of the Brave,” a nod to its anthem.

A certain well-known couple has reportedly chosen the adventurous country as the spot for their upcoming honeymoon, so you might want to think about booking tickets before it becomes the next vacation hot spot.

The destination, still a part of the British Commonwealth, is only fitting for soon-to-be-wed Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who spent their first holiday together camping under the stars in Botswana. The vast country could also afford them the privacy that is hard to come by when you’re royalty, and they most likely will be seeking on such a special trip.

Namibia, a country twice the size of Germany, is home to only around two million people, making it one of the least populated countries in the world. It’s stark landscape, inhabited by few, is by all counts otherworldly. And isn’t that exactly the point of getting away? A break from the familiar—an eye-opening escape.

Take for example the Skeleton Coast, known as a place where ships and whales go to die—their bones remain, weathered and bleached. Despite the obvious desolation, the scenes are breathtaking. It’s important to note that the northern section of the coast is only accessible by light aircraft, but worth it for the views of waves dotted by seals and flamingos and cut by another sea: one of shifting sands.

Namibia is also touted as one of Southern Africa’s best places to see wildlife, and home to the world’s largest cheetah population. Travel north to Etosha National Park to see elephants, black rhinos, and big cats. Also in the north is Damaraland, where desert-adapted elephants roam and Africa’s largest population of free-ranging rhinos are tracked.
