Raising a Glass to the American Cocktail
I’ve written before about the merits of foodie museums, but I’m ashamed I did not think to include beverage museums on the list. Well, it’s just my luck that there’s a brand-new museum worth raising your glass to.
The Museum of the American Cocktail opens today in (where else?) New Orleans’ Southern Food & Beverage Museum, promising a comprehensive look at drinking in the good ol’ U.S.A. from Thomas Jefferson’s time to the present. "It is part museum, part bar, and part Victorian bordello," says Ted "Dr. Cocktail" Haigh, museum curator. "The story of the cocktail is really the story of American history in microcosm."
The ribbon-cutting ceremony took place this morning and follows the Big Easy’s annual Tales of the Cocktail festival. In case you can’t make it to New Orleans, check out the Museum of Beer and Brewing in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, or the Bramah Museum of Tea and Coffee in (most appropriately) London, England.
