The Radar: Berlin All Aglow, Wine Cellar Movie Nights, New Olympic Coins

• Berlin flips on the switch tonight for the grand opening of their eleven-night-long 6th Annual Berlin Festival of Lights. Visitors can take a Lightseeing tour by bus, boat, balloon, horse-drawn carriage or limo to see more than 60 of the city’s most famous landmarks lit up with enormous and innovative multi-colored light installations. Highlights: Early visitors can get a sneak preview on the night of Sunday October 10th when Berlin’s classic Brandenburg Gate will be lit up in pink thanks to Estée Lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign.

• For three days in November the State Hofkeller Winery in Würzburg, Germany will be hosting movie nightsin the wooden-barrel-stocked vaulted wine cellar of their 875 year old estate. The combination of contemporary films (a selection of Alfred Hitchcock movies from the 40s and 50s) with a deeply historical location is a good illustration of State Hofkeller, where modern wine culture and eco-friendly practices are practiced in the oldest wine estate in the country. Open seating, a champagne reception and a red wine intermission await you at the end of a quietly lit labyrinth of stone corridors deep below the grounds of the massive 18th century Würzburg Residence.

• The Royal Mint in the U.K. has just released the designs for new 50 pence coins that recognize the athletic events of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Twenty-nine events will be featured on the coins, and they were selected from 30,000 designs submitted by contestants in England and Wales. [BBC]
