Gay travelers can face unique challenges—but these inclusive destinations are worth the trip.

It’s a great big world out there, and as gay families continue to grow in number—about 3 million children in the United States have an LGBTQ parent—so does the list of places welcoming them with open arms.

Many global destinations are even planning specific programs to take advantage of the growing gay family travel market, says a recent study by the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association (IGLTA). Just in time, since the vast majority of gay families say a place’s perceived acceptance is “very important” in choosing where to vacation.

And for good reason: More than 70 countries criminalize same-sex relationships and anti-LGBTQ attitudes prevail in many others. Checking the inclusiveness of a destination’s laws and policies is a good place to start, but it can be hard to know whether lack of discrimination means a truly welcoming atmostphere.
