Breaking records in sports is hard, but breaking stigmas could be even harder.

Climber Nima Rinji Sherpa is deeply familiar with this challenge. At 18, Nima became the youngest climber to summit the world’s 14 tallest peaks. It’s a remarkable feat for any athlete but especially for Nima, who is on a multi-generational quest to prove that Sherpas can also be professional climbing stars.

National Geographic subscribers got exclusive access to pick Nima’s brain as part of our Ask an Expert Anything series. He weighed in on everything from his most challenging 36-hour climb to the “mythical creature” that almost stopped him in his tracks while on expedition.
